The side quest An Eye for an Eye in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a critical storyline involving Vernon Roche and his right-hand officer, Ves. Navigating this mission correctly ensures that you keep valuable allies for future battles while securing essential story progressions. Understanding the specific steps and consequences will help you make the best tactical choices for Geralt's journey.

Starting the Quest and Meeting Roche

To initiate the quest, speak with Vernon Roche at the Temerian Partisan hideout near Oxenfurt. He explains that Ves has disobeyed direct orders to launch an attack against Nilfgaardian forces in Mulbrydale. Roche asks Geralt to assist him in stopping Ves before she gets killed.

After receiving the briefing, you must travel to the rendezvous point located near the Hanged Man's Tree in Velen. Meeting Roche at this location sets the stage for the upcoming ambush. Ensure you prepare your combat gear, as fast movement is necessary once the battle starts.

Saving Ves in Mulbrydale

Upon arriving near Mulbrydale, you will witness Ves actively fighting a group of Nilfgaardian soldiers. It is critical to rush directly into the village to draw enemy attention away from Ves. If her health reaches zero during the fight, she dies, causing the quest to fail and preventing her support later in the game.

Using heavy fast-attacks alongside the Quen sign helps clear soldiers quickly while taking the focus off Ves. Applying Hanged Man's Venom to your steel sword provides additional damage output against human targets. Once all Nilfgaardian troops are defeated, a dialogue scene will trigger between Geralt, Roche, and Ves.

Deciding the Fate of the Surviving Officer

At the end of the skirmish, a single Nilfgaardian officer is found alive on the battlefield. Roche prefers to show mercy and let the officer live, whereas Ves insists on executing him to prevent information leaks. You must make a final choice regarding whether to kill the officer or spare his life.

Choosing either option does not negatively impact the quest outcome or your rewards. However, successfully completing the mission with Ves alive guarantees Roche and Ves will aid Geralt during late-game events like the Battle of Kaer Morhen.
